Alaska Geographic Field Courses

These place-based education programs for teachers are available for professional development credits at University of Alaska, Anchorage through our partners at Alaska Geographic.

Each summer field-based teacher trainings are offered by Alaska Geographic through the Murie Science and Learning Center in Denali and Discovery Southeast (based out of Juneau). Join us for a head-first dive into fascinating subject matter. Shoulder-to-shoulder with other teachers, scientists and specialists we will experiment with activities, and discuss methods, tools, and resources.

The field courses are active learning experiences and custom-designed to explore a unique aspect of Alaska. Some involve hiking between two and five miles, while others are based out of kayaks, charter boats, or the Alaska state ferry. Most meals, lodging, equipment, and transportation are provided in the cost of tuition.

Participants on these teacher trainings must be capable walkers, in good health, and equipped for sudden changes in weather. Hiking distance and physical fitness levels are described in greater detail in each course overview document.
