For 3 weeks in July and August 7 high school students from the Kenaitze Indian Tribe in Kenai and Qutekcak Native Tribe in Seward worked with the US Forest Service, assisting with wildlife and archeology surveys and learning about careers with the National Forest. They were joined for one week by 3 additional high school students from Anchorage for an expedition into the Kenai Mountains’ Devil’s Creek area. Horse packing into remote alpine areas they worked with archeologists to document historic and prehistoric caribou hunting in the Kenai Mountains, including conducting surveys for exposed archeological remains along melting ice patches. Base camped above tree line for several days with extreme winds the group also learned a lot about how to stay safe, comfortable and happy in the wilderness, and how to work together.
