Fall 2012 Service Projects on the Chugach National Forest got off to a great start with a visit by 80 students from Highland Technical High School in Anchorage. Forty hardy students ventured to Whittier to work with Forest Service trail crews to repair erosion damage on the Portage Pass Trail. On the other side of the Tunnel, student crews enhanced salmon habitat and reinforced stream banks by planting sedges along Portage Valley creeks. Three days later, 60 students from Begich Middle School landed in the Valley to help out with Pale Poppy and salmon habitat enhancement.
